The short answer
The big shift this quarter is that capable AI got cheaper and more practical. Anthropic released its Claude 5 family between September and early October, the major providers kept competing on price, and AI agents that can carry out multi-step work became normal in coding and office tools. For a CEO, the move is not to chase every release. Pick two workflows, give a small team good tools and clear rules, and measure hours saved.
- New model families landed from the major labs, with stronger agents and lower prices for everyday tasks.
- Australian SME adoption is rising; the National AI Centre tracker put it at 43 percent in early 2026.
- AI coding agents have made custom software far cheaper to build and change.
- The winners are firms with clear workflows, not the ones with the most subscriptions.
What actually changed
Anthropic’s news page lists Claude Opus 5.5 (22 September), Sonnet 5.5 (28 September) and Haiku 5.5 (7 October) this quarter, along with work on agent skills as an open standard. Google and OpenAI also shipped faster, cheaper models aimed at agent work. The practical upshot is that the mid-priced model you can afford to run all day is now better than the flagship of a year ago. Sources: Anthropic news
The good news for business owners
Costs keep falling, the tools are easier to use, and you no longer need a data science team to get value. The National AI Centre’s tracker found 43 percent of Australian SMEs reporting some AI adoption between December 2025 and February 2026, so you are not too late and you are not alone. Where to focus
Pick workflows with lots of reading, writing or copying between systems: quoting, proposals, customer email triage, meeting follow-up, reporting. Each should have a clear before and after, such as hours per week or turnaround time.
Custom software got cheaper
Coding agents such as Claude Code and Codex now handle much of the routine work in building and changing software, with developers reviewing. Internal tools, portals and integrations that were not worth building two years ago often are now. Sources: Claude Code, OpenAI Codex
What to ignore
Benchmark headlines, tools that duplicate what you already pay for, and anything that needs your whole team retrained to save minutes. Upgrade when a new model clearly beats the old one on your own tasks.
Three moves before Christmas
One: choose two workflows and a named owner for each. Two: give that team a business plan of one assistant with data controls, not personal accounts. Three: write a one-page AI policy covering what data can be used, review rules and disclosure to customers.
Questions people ask
Which AI model should my business use?
Use the one your team gets the best results from on your own documents. Most firms use one main assistant and add specialist tools sparingly.
Is it too late to start with AI?
No. Adoption is still uneven, and the tools are easier to adopt than they were a year ago.
How do I keep up without spending hours a week?
Have one person review releases monthly against your two or three key workflows and report back in a paragraph.
