The short answer

Claude AI is an AI assistant built by Anthropic, a US company. You type or speak a request, attach documents if you like, and Claude writes, summarises, analyses or drafts a reply. It works in a web browser, a desktop app and a phone app, and it can connect to tools such as your calendar and files. For a business owner it is best thought of as a fast, well-read assistant that still needs a human to check its work. It can be wrong, so keep a person responsible for anything that reaches a client.

  • Claude is made by Anthropic and comes in several models, from small and fast to large and thorough.
  • It handles writing, summarising, analysis and spreadsheets, and can connect to your business tools.
  • It makes mistakes, so a person should review anything client-facing, legal or financial.
  • Start with one repeated task and a free account before you change how the business works.

What Claude AI actually is

Claude is a large language model: software trained on a huge amount of text that predicts and produces language. Anthropic builds it and sells access through the Claude apps and through a developer service. You talk to it in plain English. There is nothing to install beyond an app, and no technical skill is needed to get a useful first answer. Sources: Anthropic

The Claude models in one paragraph

Anthropic releases Claude in tiers. As of November 2026 the current lineup includes Opus 5.5 for long, complex work, Sonnet 5.5 as the balanced everyday model, and Haiku 5.5 for fast, high-volume tasks. You do not need to learn the differences on day one, because the app picks a sensible default. We cover the choice in a separate guide to Claude Opus vs Sonnet vs Haiku. What business owners use Claude for

The common jobs are drafting emails and proposals, summarising long documents and meeting notes, checking a contract for unusual clauses before a lawyer sees it, cleaning up spreadsheets, writing job ads, and answering questions about a pile of internal files. It also writes and runs small pieces of code, which is how people build simple tools without a developer. Start with whichever of these costs you the most hours each week, and judge the result by the time saved.

What Claude can connect to

Claude can link to outside services through connectors, built on an open standard called the Model Context Protocol. Anthropic lists connectors for services such as Google Drive, Gmail and Slack, so Claude can read your files or draft in your inbox once you approve access. Each connector is switched on by you, per conversation. Connectors are optional, and many owners get plenty of value from Claude before they connect anything at all. Where it falls short

Claude can state something wrong with total confidence, particularly on figures, legal detail and recent events. It does not know your business unless you tell it or connect your files. Long projects can drift unless you give clear instructions. A free plan also has usage limits, so heavy daily use usually needs a paid plan. None of this is a reason to avoid it, only a reason to build a checking step into every task.

How to start without a big project

Pick one task you do every week, such as turning meeting notes into a follow-up email. Do it with Claude for two weeks, compare the result with your usual version and note how long it saves. If it helps, add a second task. Write down what you must never paste in, such as client personal information, before staff begin. Keep the trial small enough that nobody feels the business is being changed, and share what you learn.
