The short answer

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode put generated answers in front of searchers, which can change how many click through to your site, especially for simple questions. Google says there are no special extra requirements to appear in these features, so ordinary SEO fundamentals still apply: be indexed, be crawlable and publish genuinely useful content. For a small business, the practical response is to check your own searches, watch Search Console, and focus on pages that earn a click because they offer more than a short summary.

  • Google says no special optimisation is needed beyond SEO fundamentals.
  • Simple informational queries are the most exposed to summaries replacing clicks.
  • Local, transactional and detailed pages tend to give people a reason to visit.
  • Appearances in these features are counted in Search Console totals.

AI Overviews give a generated summary above results for some searches, and AI Mode offers a conversational search experience for longer questions. Both cite pages as sources. People may read the answer and not click, so some pages see fewer visits even while their rankings hold. Sources: Google Search Help: AI Overviews, Google: AI Mode in Search

What Google says about visibility

Google’s guidance for site owners says the same SEO best practices apply to these features, and there are no additional technical requirements to be included. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Google also says its systems show an AI Overview only when it adds to classic results. Which traffic is at risk

Plain how-to and definition queries are the most exposed, because a short answer may satisfy the reader. Pages for pricing, local services, comparisons and booking are less exposed, because people need to visit. Look at your own top pages and sort them by how much a summary could replace them.

How to measure it

AI feature appearances are included in the totals in Search Console, so you will not see them split out. Compare clicks and impressions for your key pages over several months and watch for pages where impressions hold and clicks fall. Also run your own searches and note whether an overview appears and whether you are cited. Sources: Google Search Central: AI features and your website

What to do about it

Keep pages crawlable, fast and clear. Answer questions directly near the top, then give what a summary cannot: your local detail, real examples, photos, prices guidance, a quote form. Fix your Google Business Profile and make contact details easy to find. Do not rewrite everything for AI.

What not to do

Avoid blocking Google from your content in a panic, because that removes you from search as well. Be wary of anyone selling a secret trick for AI answers; Google says there is none. Invest in pages that deserve a visit and in other channels such as email and referrals.
