The short answer
Google AI is Google’s name for its artificial intelligence products, and the main ones are Gemini, AI Mode and AI Overviews. Gemini is the family of models and the chat assistant you can use directly. AI Overviews are the short AI summaries that appear at the top of some Google searches. AI Mode is a separate conversational search experience for longer questions. Gemini also runs inside Google Workspace, and developers use it through Google AI Studio. For a business owner, the first question is whether you are using these tools yourself or being found through them.
- Gemini is the assistant and model family. AI Overviews and AI Mode are ways Google Search uses AI.
- Your customers meet AI Overviews and AI Mode whether you adopt anything or not.
- Gemini inside Workspace is the version most relevant to staff email, documents and meetings.
- Paid plans, limits and features change often, so check Google’s pages before committing.
Gemini: the assistant and the models
Gemini is Google’s family of AI models and also the name of the assistant you chat with in the Gemini app and on gemini.google.com. You can ask it to draft, summarise, analyse a document or work from an image. The same models sit behind many other Google products, which is why the name appears everywhere. There is a free tier and paid Google AI plans with higher limits, covered in our guide to whether Gemini is free. Sources: Google: Gemini subscriptions
AI Overviews: summaries inside Google Search
AI Overviews are short generated answers shown above the usual results for some searches, with links to the pages they drew from. Google decides when to show one. You do not turn it on, and your customers will see it when they search for what you sell. That makes it a visibility matter more than a tool you adopt. Sources: Google Search Help: AI Overviews
AI Mode: search that holds a conversation
AI Mode is a separate tab in Google Search where people ask longer, more detailed questions and follow up in a conversation. It still shows links to sources. It suits comparisons and planning, such as choosing between suppliers or working out a trip. Availability and features differ by country and change often, so check Google’s own page for what Australians currently get. Sources: Google: AI Mode in Search
Gemini in Workspace and for developers
If your team uses Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Meet, Gemini can work inside them to draft, summarise and organise. Developers and technical staff can also test Gemini in Google AI Studio and build it into products through the API. Those are different doors to the same models, with different data terms, so decide which one you mean before you roll anything out. Sources: Google Workspace: Gemini and AI, Google AI Studio
What a business owner should do first
Start with one low-risk use, such as drafting replies or summarising long documents, using a work account rather than a personal one. Separately, search for your own services and see whether an AI Overview appears and whether your site is among its sources. Those two checks tell you more than any feature list.
Where Google AI is weaker
Generated answers can be wrong, and summaries can leave out the detail that matters to a contract or a quote. Treat output as a draft. For regulated advice, read the source rather than the summary. The products also change names and limits often, so what you read this month may shift by the next.
Questions people ask
Is Google AI the same as Gemini?
Gemini is the main Google AI model and assistant, but Google AI also includes AI Overviews, AI Mode and other tools built on Gemini.
Do I need to pay to use Google AI?
Not to start. Search features and a free Gemini tier cost nothing. Paid plans raise limits and add features, so check the official plans page.
Is Google AI safe for business data?
It depends on the account type. Work accounts under Workspace terms carry business data commitments; personal accounts follow consumer terms. Read Google’s terms for the one you use.
